Brake discs drilled for Big Brake Kit D2 from years 2015+

Differences between the slotted and drilled brake disc:

Slotted:

In the brake discs, minor indentations (from four to eight evenly distributed) are typical, milled on the surface of the brake disc. The grooves provide the same cooling benefits as the holes, but with less risk of splitting and crevices, because the grooves usually do not extend over the entire rotor surface (although there are currently such models on the market).
The grooves are usually directed and bent in such a way that they can cover the entire surface of the brake pads, providing much better ventilation than a number of openings.
On the basis of some types of cuts, the condition of the brake disc can be assessed.
The grooves also give a "shaving" effect that keeps the brake pads clean surface more clean for better steam contact.
In addition, the presence of cuts acts as a grater, increasing the efficiency of braking the car.
At the same time, you should be aware that the pad wear increases. In order to avoid fast abrasion, it is recommended to select quality blocks for such disks.

Drilled:

Drilling from 30 to 40 evenly distributed holes in the brake discs improves the ventilation of the air and the cooling effect.

The openings have indeed yielded an unexpected benefit. They created channels for extracting hot gases emitted by brake pads. Phenolic resins, which are used as a binder to connect the brake pads, give off steam when overheated. The gas can form a boundary layer between the pads and the brake disc, which reduces friction.

In our case, the boundary layer of gas between the surface of the blocks and the brake disc prevents the pads from connecting to the brake disc, reduces friction and braking power, just at the moment when the driver needs it the most. If the brake disc is perforated or has cuts, the holes or grooves separate the boundary layer and provide a gas outlet, then the pads can have full contact with the brake discs. In addition, holes and grooves help remove dust and dirt that gets into the space between the brake disc and pads.
At the microscopic level, the dirt between the pads and the brake disc can reduce the contact surface of the steam. Naturally, it also reduces friction and equipment efficiency. Therefore, the holes, helping to remove dust and dirt, provide the pads with the ability to maintain maximum surface contact.
